An amphiphilic nonapeptide (Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu, ~850 Da) whose gene precursor has not been identified and for which no dedicated receptor has been cloned. It has no close sequence homologues and co-localizes immunohistochemically with other small peptides in structural distribution-mapping studies. The unmodified backbone is subject to rapid degradation by aminopeptidases, giving a short in-vitro half-life that is relevant to handling and assay design; alpha-Asp/beta-Asp isomerization at the Asp residues is a recognized identity consideration.
