How should sealed lyophilized peptide powder be stored?

Keep a sealed vial of lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptide cold, dry and out of the light. Most of our compound records give about −20 °C, a standard freezer, for long-term storage of the sealed powder. The powder tolerates room temperature while it ships, which is why it ships without ice.

What is lyophilized peptide?

Lyophilization is freeze-drying: the water is removed under vacuum at low temperature, leaving a dry powder or a small solid cake in the vial. Taking the water out is what keeps the powder stable in storage and in transit.

What conditions matter for the sealed powder?

FactorWhy it mattersWhat to do
TemperatureLower temperatures slow chemical change in the powderA freezer (about −20 °C) for long-term storage, or a refrigerator for shorter periods, as each compound record states
MoistureMany peptide powders are hygroscopic: they take up water from the airKeep the vial sealed, and store it with a desiccant if the room is humid
LightSome residues, such as tryptophan and methionine, are sensitive to lightKeep the vial in its box or another dark container
AirOxygen can oxidize sensitive residues such as methionine and cysteineLeave the seal intact
Temperature swingsRepeated warming and cooling can draw moisture inKeep the vial in one place rather than moving it in and out of the cold

Does the powder need to ship cold?

No. Sealed lyophilized peptide tolerates room temperature for the days it spends in transit, so our orders ship in a plain mailer without ice or cold packs. Move the vial to cold storage when it arrives.

What should you check when a vial arrives?

  • The cap and seal are intact.
  • The label shows the product, the amount and the lot number.
  • The lot number matches a certificate: scan the QR code on the vial, or type the lot into the lot checker at luvaminos.com/coa.
  • The powder can look like a solid cake, loose powder or a thin film on the glass. Freeze-dried material settles differently from vial to vial; the amount is set by weight, not by how it looks.

How long does sealed powder keep?

Each compound record in our research library gives the storage temperature its sources state for the sealed powder. Our vials carry no printed expiry date; the lot number leads to that lot's certificate, which shows the date it was tested.

Questions

What temperature should lyophilized peptide be stored at?

Most of our compound records give about −20 °C, a standard freezer, for long-term storage of the sealed powder, with a refrigerator for shorter periods. Each record's Storage section states its own figure.

Does lyophilized peptide spoil at room temperature?

Sealed powder tolerates room temperature for the days it spends in shipping, which is why it ships without ice. For storage, keep it cold, dry and dark.

Why keep a desiccant with peptide vials?

Many peptide powders take up water from the air. A desiccant keeps the air around the vials dry, which matters most in a humid room.

Is there an expiry date on the vial?

There is no printed expiry date. The lot number on the label takes you to that lot's certificate, which shows the date it was tested.
